About The Carraway House
Virginia Beach was a sleepy port town when John Carraway built this home in 1734. It is believed to be one of the oldest wooden structures in Virginia Beach, and one of the oldest in Virginia. The Carraway House is an 18th century saltbox style home that is situated nearby the location that heard the first volleys of the American Revolution. The house still contains family artifacts. Much of the original design, including the wide pine floorboards and the woodwork on the doors, remains. Family Bibles published in the 19th century contain birth records of family members written in faded pencil. The Carraway family, which probably immigrated from England in the late 1600s, worked as carpenters and s likely would have raised much of their own food, including chickens and vegetables on their 80 acres. It is also believe that the house may have played an important role in the Underground Railroad. There are unconfirmed stories of underground tunnels that led from the Carraway House to the nearby estate of Pleasant Hall.
Whatever secrets this wonderful old house holds, there is one thing that everyone can agree on . It has been the backdrop to many memories and histories. We are humbled and delighted to now be part of yours...
